Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson Hit with Two-Match Ban After Club World Cup Red Card Against Flamengo
Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson has been handed a two-match suspension by FIFA following his straight red card in Chelsea’s Club World Cup defeat to Brazilian giants Flamengo on Friday, June 20.
The 24-year-old striker was initially set to miss just one game — Chelsea’s final group stage match against Tunisia’s Esperance Sportive de Tunis, which the Blues won 3–0 — due to the automatic suspension that follows a red card. However, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee reviewed the incident and imposed a harsher penalty, citing serious foul play.
Jackson was dismissed for a dangerous studs-up challenge on Flamengo defender Ayrton Lucas, marking his second sending-off in just four matches — a worrying trend for the Senegalese attacker.
In a statement quoted by ESPN on Tuesday, FIFA said:
“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has imposed the following sanction on Chelsea’s player Nicolas Jackson who was sent off as a result of a direct red card during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 match between his team and CR Flamengo… A two-match suspension for breach under Article 14, paragraph 1 (e) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. This decision is final and binding and cannot be appealed.”
FIFA rules state that red cards in the tournament typically carry a one-match suspension. However, the governing body retains the authority to lengthen bans depending on the severity of the offense — a power it clearly exercised in this case.
Jackson issued an apology via social media shortly after the match, expressing regret for the challenge and vowing to learn from the incident. His absence will now extend to Chelsea’s round of 16 clash against Portuguese side Benfica.
The extended ban adds further pressure on Chelsea’s forward options as they continue their quest for silverware in the United States-hosted competition.
