Chelsea To Investigate ‘Racist’ Video Posted By Enzo Fernandez Jeering French Players
Chelsea are investigating a video midfielder Enzo Fernandez posted on social media which the French Football Federation (FFF) alleges is racist.
Fernandez and some of his Argentina team-mates were in a video chanting a derogatory song about the France team in an Instagram live video published on his account after they beat Colombia in the Copa America final on Sunday.
The offensive and rac!st chant mocked the African origins of black players within the French squad, including captain Kylian Mbappé.
The vulgar chant includes lyrics such as: “They play for France but come from Angola” and “Their mother is Nigerian, their father is Cambodian but on their passport: France.”
Fernandez’s Chelsea teammate, Wesley Fofana reposted the video on social media with the caption: “Football in 2024: uninhibited racism”.
The FFF has alleged that the song sung by Argentina’s national team is “racist and discriminatory”.
The French Football Federation also said it will file a legal complaint alleging “racially offensive and discriminatory remarks” were made by Argentina players.
Fernandez has apologised on Instagram for posting the video and any offence its content may have caused.
“The song includes highly offensive language and there is absolutely no excuse for these words,” he said.
“I stand against discrimination in all forms and apologise for getting caught up in the euphoria of our Copa America celebrations.
“That video, that moment, those words, do not reflect my beliefs or my character.
“I am truly sorry.”
According to Sky Sports, Chelsea is investigating the provocative video.
