This signing follows Chelsea’s recent 2-1 loss to Tottenham in Sydney. The squad is now preparing for a match against Juventus in Hong Kong on August 5, following their earlier 6-4 victory over the Western Sydney Wanderers. Brighton thanked Welbeck for his six-year contribution, noting his role as an influential figure for the club since 2020.
Welbeck expressed his excitement about the move, citing Chelsea’s historical ambition to secure silverware as a primary motivator. Under Xabi Alonso, the club is shifting its recruitment strategy toward experienced, established professionals. This approach is further highlighted by ongoing negotiations for 36-year-old midfielder Jordan Henderson, as the club moves away from earlier targets like Granit Xhaka.
