Chelsea Seal £30m Deal for Liam Delap from Ipswich Town
Chelsea have officially secured the signing of Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap after activating his £30 million release clause. The 22-year-old has inked a long-term deal with the Blues, keeping him at Stamford Bridge until 2031.
The release clause was triggered following Ipswich’s relegation from the Premier League, opening the door for a transfer battle which Chelsea ultimately won—beating off stiff competition from Manchester United and Newcastle United.
Chelsea will pay £20 million upfront, with the remaining £10 million structured in instalments. Ipswich have also negotiated a sell-on clause, ensuring they’ll benefit financially if Delap moves again in the future.
The young forward becomes one of Chelsea’s first major summer acquisitions, as the club looks to bolster its attacking options under a new direction.
The England U21 international told Chelsea’s official website: “I understand the stature of this club and can see the trajectory it is on with these players and the head coach.
“It’s going to be an incredible place for me to develop, and I hope to achieve amazing things here and help the club win more trophies.”
He added: “Growing up watching this club and how incredible it has been over the years, I wanted to come here to win trophies.
“When I spoke to the club, everyone wanted to get back to the very top, and they have the quality and the players to do that.
“The hunger and desire to keep adding trophies, to take the club back to where it belongs, that is the main objective.”
Liam Delap’s move to Chelsea not only secures him a long-term future at Stamford Bridge but also positions him for an immediate high-profile debut at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. The 22-year-old striker is expected to feature in Chelsea’s opening match against LAFC on June 16.
Delap becomes the club’s second signing of the summer, following the arrival of Portuguese midfielder Dario Essugo from Sporting Lisbon. His transfer follows Ipswich Town’s relegation, which activated a £30 million release clause in his contract.
Despite his team’s drop back to the Championship, Delap stood out in his debut Premier League season, netting 12 goals in 37 appearances under manager Kieran McKenna. Now, he’ll be looking to bring that form to Chelsea’s frontline as the Blues aim for global silverware and a domestic revival.
