Babcock VC Charges New Students To Embrace Discipline, Excellence As New Session Begins

The Vice Chancellor of Babcock University, Ilisan-Remo, Prof. Ademola Tayo, has called on newly admitted students to embrace humility, stay focused on their studies, and steer far from cultism, hooliganism, and other vices capable of destroying their future.

Tayo delivered the charge on Thursday during the matriculation ceremony for 3,432 fresh undergraduate and postgraduate students held at the university’s amphitheatre. He reminded them that by choosing Babcock, they had signed up for an education that shapes both intellect and character an approach he said prepares graduates for meaningful impact locally and globally.

As he congratulated the new intakes, the outgoing VC who concludes his tenure on December 1 after serving two consecutive terms urged them to remain disciplined, diligent, and spiritually rooted.

“Success is never accidental,” he said. “It demands discipline, humility, focus, and trust in God. Attend classes regularly, submit assignments on time, and participate fully in all academic activities.”

Tayo stressed that the university maintains zero tolerance for cultism, corruption, exam malpractice, hooliganism, and any form of immoral behaviour. He appealed to parents and guardians to support the institution in keeping the campus peaceful and secure.

He encouraged the new students to respect their lecturers and peers, dress modestly, and uphold the values of love, integrity, accountability, and excellence that define the Seventh-day Adventist institution.

“Take advantage of every opportunity you find here from academics and leadership to research, spiritual growth, and personal development. Become the best version of yourself and carry the honour of being a Babcock ambassador,” he added.

Tayo said the training offered at the university would equip the students with the resilience and moral clarity needed to thrive in a world shaped by economic uncertainty and rapid technological change. He urged them to stay determined even in the face of challenges, keeping their focus on the purpose God has placed before them.

Reaffirming the institution’s commitment to high academic standards, he noted the continued investment in infrastructure, technology, and human resources to meet modern learning needs. He highlighted ongoing upgrades to ICT systems, a modern data centre, resilient energy supply, smart classrooms, and digital learning tools.

The VC’s warnings come against the backdrop of persistent vices in Nigerian universities cultism, drug abuse, sexual harassment, exam malpractice, and cybercrime which continue to endanger students and undermine the learning environment.
