Atiku Ally Segun Sowunmi Hints At Leaving PDP To Support Tinubu
Segun Sowunmi, once the thunderous voice behind Atiku Abubakar’s presidential campaign, has hinted at a political shift that could send ripples through Nigeria’s opposition ranks. In a candid interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time Tuesday night, the seasoned PDP stalwart declared that his support for President Bola Tinubu would not come as a half-measure — it would come with a change of robes.
The former spokesman didn’t mince words. He acknowledged that his political compass may be recalibrating, and the idea of ditching the PDP is no longer unthinkable. “There is a strong possibility I might leave the PDP,” he confessed, opening the door to a potential defection that could alter the shape of discourse ahead of 2027.
Sowunmi’s comments come amid rising tensions within the PDP, as internal divisions and leadership fatigue have cast shadows over the party’s role as Nigeria’s main opposition. His frankness echoes a growing sentiment among some political actors: that loyalty to a party must align with a clear vision for national progress — or it becomes dead weight.
He said, “If I’m going to support Tinubu in 2027, by God and everything that is in me, I will leave and join his party.
“I don’t believe in the nonsense that says you are in one party while supporting someone else.
“I don’t have time for pretence, if I’m not there, I’m not there. I have been in PDP for 28 years and most of them don’t even have that record of 28 days.
“If I’m going to leave to support the president, I will damn say that I’m going. Why will anyone with sense in his head stay in a party when you are telling them to repair the party?
“I have screamed and shouted that we needed to reform the party. There is a very strong possibility, looking at what is going on in my environment, looking at my state where I come from, looking at my tribe and desire – there is a very strong possibility that I may likely leave.”
