With the Osun State gubernatorial election approaching in under 48 hours, political activity has reached a fever pitch. The Independent National Electoral Commission has confirmed an electorate of 2,339,233 voters. Among the 15 candidates, Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party remains a primary focus as he seeks re-election.
Adeleke’s campaign is bolstered by strong ties to labor unions, including the NLC and TUC, alongside his track record of infrastructure projects across all three senatorial districts. His standing is further supported by specific traditional leaders, most notably the Ataoja of Osogbo, and the migration of former allies of Senator Iyiola Omisore from the APC to the Accord Party. The Governor also retains a significant power base in the Osun-West Senatorial District, particularly within his home constituency of Ede, which commands a large portion of the state’s total registered voters.
However, the Governor faces significant hurdles. Critics point to early policy missteps, such as the dismissal of educators, medical staff, and media personnel without adequate replacement. His administration also grapples with accusations of nepotism regarding state hiring practices, which allegedly prioritize individuals from Ede. Furthermore, opposition groups are highlighting perceived failures in critical sectors like healthcare, commerce, and agriculture. A notable shift in political support has occurred as a segment of the PDP loyal to former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola has pledged its allegiance to the APM candidate, Adewale Adebayo.
