Anambra and Abia States Coordinate with NBC to Settle Boundary Conflicts

Officials from Anambra and Abia met with the National Boundary Commission in Awka to advance the peaceful resolution of their shared border dispute, confirming that 15 kilometers of the 23-kilometer boundary have already been demarcated.

Representatives from Anambra and Abia, including deputy governors and local monarchs, gathered in Awka on Thursday to address ongoing territorial disagreements. The assembly, held at the Anambra Country Club, served as a platform to renew their dedication to a peaceful settlement and foster regional unity.

Deputy governors Dr. Onyekachi Ibezim and Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu encouraged participants to prioritize communication and avoid actions that might harm the bond between border communities. Representing the Anambra State Boundary Committee, Hon. Ekenechukwu Okoye emphasized that the state remains focused on legal and constitutional paths toward resolution. He noted that boundary issues deeply impact citizens’ livelihoods and require an honest, professional approach.

Surveyor Adamu A. Adaji, Director-General of the National Boundary Commission, praised the states for their ongoing cooperation. He reported that 15 kilometers of the 23-kilometer shared border have already been successfully demarcated, with work continuing on the remaining eight-kilometer stretch. Adaji pledged the Commission’s continued technical support, grounded in historical and legal documentation.

Speaking for Abia State, Hon. Barr. Chijioke Nwankwo highlighted the shared ancestry and cultural ties between the two regions, urging that boundary markers represent unity rather than separation. The gathering concluded with a formal signing of a communiqué, where all parties committed to accelerating the delineation process while maintaining a peaceful coexistence.
