Akpabio threatens legal action against National Assembly contractor over microphone failures

Senate President Godswill Akpabio is threatening legal action against the National Assembly renovation contractor due to recurring audio and technical failures.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has announced that he may initiate legal proceedings against the firm tasked with renovating the National Assembly complex. The warning follows ongoing technical malfunctions in both the Senate and House of Representatives chambers, which Akpabio characterized as a national disgrace.

During Wednesday’s plenary session, Akpabio voiced his frustration regarding frequent microphone outages. He recalled a similar experience during Tuesday’s National Assembly Open Week at the House of Representatives, where both he and the Speaker faced significant issues with the audio equipment.

Since returning to the refurbished chambers in April 2024, lawmakers have struggled with malfunctioning electronic voting systems and poor sound quality despite substantial financial investments in the renovation project. Akpabio confirmed that Senate leadership is keeping a record of these failures to support potential legal claims. He noted that the Senate intends to hold the contractor accountable to ensure the project meets acceptable standards, especially after manual voting methods had to be utilized during the State Police Bill proceedings due to equipment failure.
