Airport Taxi Drivers Challenge FAAN Over Mandate for Newer Vehicle Models

Airport taxi drivers are protesting a FAAN directive requiring them to use 2020 model vehicles, citing the prohibitive N18 million cost and current economic struggles.

Operators of airport taxi services have publicly voiced their opposition to a recent Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) mandate. The directive compels drivers to utilize vehicle models produced in 2020 or later. In a widely circulated video, the drivers expressed that the current economic climate under President Bola Tinubu makes it impossible for them to purchase the required cars, which they claim cost at least N18 million.

Addressing the public in Yoruba, the drivers appealed for direct intervention from both the citizenry and the President. One protester emphasized the extreme financial burden, stating that purchasing such expensive vehicles is unrealistic given the present national economic hardship. Furthermore, the drivers voiced concerns regarding a planned proprietary taxi application from FAAN and urged officials to broadcast their grievances to the administration. They concluded their plea by highlighting the lack of available jobs and requesting immediate sympathy and policy adjustment.
