Abia State Government hosts safety workshop for Keke drivers

The Abia State government and local tricycle union leaders held a safety seminar in Aba to teach drivers about traffic regulations and defensive driving techniques.

On Monday, the Aba branch of the Abia State Tricycle Operators Union (ASTOPU) conducted a workshop designed to minimize road accidents. Chimezie Ukaegbu, the Commissioner for Transport, opened the session by stressing the necessity of following traffic laws and practicing caution on the road. Represented by Senior Special Assistant Obioma Nwogbe, the Commissioner encouraged participants to utilize this training to gain essential safety skills.

The curriculum covered defensive driving, vehicle upkeep, and financial literacy, while highlighting the duty drivers have to protect their passengers. Frank Nwaohamuo, representing the NDLEA, warned that using stimulants severely compromises a driver’s focus and leads to deadly crashes. Furthermore, Uduma Uduma of the Federal Road Safety Corps advised operators to avoid excessive speed and warned against driving against the flow of traffic. ASTOPU chairman Victor Azubuike noted that the initiative serves as a vital reminder of the risks associated with reckless driving.
