The Abia State government has issued a stern warning to citizens regarding the improper disposal of waste in gutters. During the monthly sanitation event in Umuahia, Commissioner for Environment Philomen Ogbonna expressed dissatisfaction with the current level of public compliance. Represented by Mrs. Happiness Akpulonu, the commissioner emphasized that blocking water channels significantly increases the risk of flooding and health crises.
Addressing the conduct of traders at Orie Ugba Market, officials noted that illegal dumping sites were identified and cautioned that the government is prepared to enforce strict penalties against environmental violators. Furthermore, sanitary inspectors have been directed to intensify their oversight efforts across all communities to mitigate these risks.
Kalu Mba Nwoke, Chairman of the House of Assembly Committee on Environment, called on the Umuahia Capital Development Authority to clear obstructed drains specifically along Isi Gate and Owerri Road. Meanwhile, Yaro Danlandi, leader of the local Hausa community, demonstrated his commitment to the clean environment policy of Governor Alex Otti by leading drainage clearing efforts in the Ama Hausa sector.
Law enforcement actions resulted in the arrest of 66 individuals for environmental regulation violations. Presiding magistrate O.C. Ibekwe oversaw a mobile court session where nine people were assigned community service and forty were issued monetary fines. Seven individuals were released due to health concerns or student status.
