U-Recycle Initiative Africa, a youth-focused non-profit, recently concluded the second iteration of its PlasticWize program. Titled PlasticWize 2.0, the initiative aims to foster sustainable habits within Nigerian higher education institutions. The project was successfully executed at the University of Lagos, the University of Benin, Obafemi Awolowo University, and Ladoke Akintola University of Technology.
Backed by the Global Environment Facility and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, the program centers on shifting student behavior toward circular economy principles. A core part of the campaign, known as the Eco-Campus Outreach, utilized art, storytelling, and humor over six months to encourage students to cut down on single-use plastics.
Additionally, more than 1,200 students participated in the #iAmPlasticWize Challenge, a ten-day interactive experience designed to promote sustainable lifestyle choices. Four students were awarded N250,000 scholarships for their exceptional dedication during the challenge: Hameedah Raji from LAUTECH, Olamiposi Olasanoye from UNILAG, Adebayo Olugbenga from OAU, and Favour Orukpe from UNIBEN.
