Lagos authorities close Ikoyi building for illegal sewage dumping

Lagos State has shuttered an Ikoyi property for consistently dumping raw sewage into a canal using a malfunctioning treatment system.

Lagos State officials have shut down a facility located at 5 Manuwa Street, Ikoyi, due to the illegal release of raw sewage into a local canal. The property relied on a broken wastewater treatment system, leading to persistent environmental violations.

This enforcement action took place this past Wednesday, as confirmed by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office. The operation followed reports from local citizens and a verification process that substantiated the claims of environmental harm.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, announced the closure via his social media account. He stated that the property’s failing equipment caused a continuous flow of untreated waste into the waterway. Furthermore, the site was described as unhygienic, creating a significant nuisance and raising public health concerns due to the resulting stench.

The Commissioner emphasized that the state remains dedicated to upholding environmental standards to ensure a healthy living environment for all residents. He advised property owners to follow proper wastewater disposal protocols, warning that failure to do so will lead to legal penalties and prosecution.
