Abia Council Limits Motorcycle Operating Hours to Combat Rising Crime

Ukwa West LGA in Abia State has restricted commercial motorcycle operations to daytime hours following a series of criminal incidents, including a recent murder.

Dike Briggs Nwankwo, the Chairman of Ukwa West Local Government Area in Abia State, has ordered that commercial motorcycle services must cease between 6:00 pm and 6:00 am. This mandate takes effect on July 2, 2026. The policy serves as a direct response to a surge in local violence, most notably the recent murder of a recent graduate named Chinye Uche, who was killed by attackers seeking to steal his motorcycle.

Chidi Onyedikachi, the Chief Press Secretary for the council, confirmed that the decision resulted from thorough discussions with security agencies, state officials, and local motorcycle operator unions. To enhance monitoring and safety, the local government is also launching a mandatory registration program for all commercial motorcycle drivers.

Furthermore, operators are now required to park and load passengers only at a designated site near the market to ensure orderly traffic flow and prevent congestion. The administration has cautioned that any breach of these rules, including operating outside of the authorized hours, will lead to the confiscation of motorcycles, immediate arrest, and potential legal charges. These steps were implemented primarily to safeguard the lives and assets of local residents.
