Donald Duke advocates for radical restructuring of Nigeria’s financial framework

PRP presidential aspirant Donald Duke calls for sweeping financial reforms, arguing that high interest rates and poor spending choices are suppressing Nigeria’s economic potential.

Donald Duke, the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) candidate for the 2027 presidential election, has demanded a total restructuring of Nigeria’s financial sector. The former Cross River State governor warned that excessive interest rates, increasing national debt, and inefficient government expenditure are stifling commercial activity and hindering national economic expansion.

Duke emphasized that the current lending environment, where interest rates exceed 30 percent, makes genuine business development unfeasible. He pledged that a future administration under his leadership would focus on creating a financial ecosystem that prioritizes productivity rather than just debt service. By shifting the focus toward affordable credit and disciplined fiscal management, he believes the nation can curb inflation and stimulate growth.

In his critique of current fiscal priorities, Duke argued that the government fails to invest in essential areas. He proposed redirecting funds into electricity, healthcare, education, and the justice system, noting that these sectors act as the primary catalysts for job creation and long-term development. He asserted that Nigeria has the necessary human and natural resources to prosper if the government adopts a more prudent approach to taxation and resource management.

Highlighting his own background, Duke pointed to his tenure as governor as proof of his focus on institutional building. He promised that his presidential administration would reject political patronage, selecting officials based strictly on their competence and personal integrity. According to Duke, the true work of governance starts by assembling a skilled team dedicated to leaving the country in a better state than they found it.
