A recent surge in bandit activity within the Lau Local Government Area of Taraba State has resulted in five deaths and forced hundreds of residents to abandon their homes. Over the last month, armed groups have overtaken areas including Kunini, Jimlari, Garin-Magaji, Donnada, and Garin-Dogo, frequently engaging in violent raids and kidnappings.
Among the victims of these abductions was Jauro Tace, the village head of Garin-Magaji, who was freed following a ransom payment. The five fatalities occurred during various incidents between June 30 and July 27, 2026. Many displaced families, particularly those from Fulani settlements, have sought safety in Garin-Dogo, with some sheltering at the home of local legislative leader Dauda.
Local resident Joseph Mustafa noted that the area remains paralyzed by fear, noting that citizens are unable to rest due to the constant threat. While Governor Agbu Kefas previously managed to curb such violence, the current escalation has prompted warnings from officials that agricultural output may suffer, leading to potential food shortages. Two survivors, Musa Umar and Alhaji Abdul Biro, are currently recovering at the Federal Medical Centre in Jalingo after being attacked in Bumanda village. Communities are now urging the federal government and security forces to intervene immediately to restore stability and allow displaced families to return home.
