Kano court sentences man to seven years for selling cannabis online

A Federal High Court in Kano has sentenced 28-year-old Ashiru Idris to seven years in prison for using social media to advertise cannabis.

A 28-year-old man has been handed a seven-year prison sentence for marketing cannabis on social media. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) confirmed the conviction, noting that Justice S.M. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court in Kano issued the ruling without a fine option.

Ashiru Idris was initially taken into custody on April 22, 2026. His arrest followed the viral spread of a video in which he was seen publicly advertising the illegal substance. Following the directive of the Kano State Commander, CN D.Y. Lawal, officers tracked down the suspect based on this footage.

The court ordered that the seven-year term for Idris officially began on July 14, 2026. Officials at the NDLEA stated that this sentencing serves as a stern deterrent to anyone attempting to conduct illicit drug business on the internet. Commander Lawal emphasized that the agency remains committed to identifying and prosecuting those who use digital platforms to distribute illegal drugs. The NDLEA continues to appeal to the public, community leaders, and social media companies to assist in suppressing drug abuse by reporting suspicious activities.
