Abia State officials have announced what they believe to be the fastest rape convictions within the national Sexual Assault Referral Centre network. Two separate child abuse cases resulted in prison terms of 30 and 10 years, respectively. Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, Mrs. Ngozi Felix, noted that these rulings demonstrate Governor Alex Otti’s strict stance against gender-based violence. One case involved a 35-year-old man who was sentenced to 10 years for defiling a five-year-old child; he was apprehended in Nasarawa and tried immediately upon his return to Abia. A second individual received a 30-year sentence for abusing a 13-year-old.
Alongside these legal advancements, the state reported one of the lowest maternal mortality rates in Nigeria during the first quarter of 2026. Health Commissioner Prof. Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche confirmed there was only one maternal death recorded during that period. This progress is linked to the renovation of 200 primary healthcare centers under the government’s Project Ekwueme initiative. Furthermore, enrollment in the state’s health insurance scheme has surged significantly, growing from roughly 40,000 to over 225,000 beneficiaries since late 2024. The administration also noted that it is collaborating with the Gates Foundation to implement a digital immunisation tracking system for children across Abia, Akwa Ibom, Delta, and Anambra states.
