Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has formally requested an independent investigation by the United Nations into the May 14 kidnapping of students and educators from the Ahoro-Esinle and Yawota areas in Oriire Local Government. Following the recovery of 44 victims, the Governor emphasized in a broadcast from Ibadan that the international community should help uncover the truth behind this serious incident.
Makinde stated that a thorough, transparent probe is essential to determine if any systemic negligence or collusion occurred, ensuring justice for those affected. He stressed that this initiative aims to restore public trust and guarantee that students can attend school safely, noting that the rescue is merely the start of a broader pursuit of accountability.
While expressing relief over the survivors’ return, the Governor mourned the loss of teachers Joel Adesiyan, John Olaleye, and Michael Oyedokun, as well as several security personnel, including Lt. F. A. Isaac and members of the Amotekun Corps. To prevent future incidents, the state government plans to implement stricter oversight on routes near the Old Oyo National Park, despite its federal status, by enhancing community intelligence and regulating movement in border zones.
