Senate Authorizes N404 Billion Budget for Police Trust Fund for 2025 and 2026

The Senate has approved a N404.07 billion budget for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund for 2025 and 2026, aimed at improving national security and police infrastructure.

The Nigerian Senate has finalized the approval of a N404.07 billion budget for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF), covering the 2025 and 2026 fiscal years. This funding is intended to bolster national security infrastructure and enhance overall police operations. The breakdown includes N170.10 billion for 2025 and N233.96 billion for 2026.

This legislative action followed a presentation by the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, delivered by Senator Yunus Akintunde on behalf of committee chairman Senator Ahmad Mallam-Madori. Akintunde clarified that the 2025 allocation is a re-presentation of a previously approved budget that was stalled by legal challenges concerning the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (Establishment) Act.

During the proceedings, Senator Abdul Ningi emphasized the importance of the NPTF in addressing critical funding deficits, noting that the organization had been unable to access its budget for nearly three years due to legal roadblocks. He urged the agency to ensure strict accountability for all disbursed funds.

Senate Chief Whip Mohammed Monguno expressed satisfaction with the 2026 budget proposal, noting that over 90 percent of the funds are earmarked for capital projects. He encouraged other government agencies to adopt a similar focus on capital expenditure to maximize operational impact.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who led the session, praised the committee’s efforts. He noted that the funds are expected to strengthen the police force’s ability to tackle rising threats such as banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping. This budget approval follows the recent passage of the Police Trust Fund Act (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, which aims to improve the agency’s legal framework and increase its share of Federation Account revenue from 0.5 percent to one percent.
