The Zone 2 Police Command in Onikan, Lagos, has successfully detained nine individuals suspected of operating two separate criminal networks dedicated to stealing and rerouting goods during transit. Authorities confirmed the recovery of various items estimated to be worth over N60 million.
Assistant Inspector-General Olohundare Jimoh, through spokesperson DSP Gbenga Afolayan, confirmed that the Zone 2 Dragon Team utilized intelligence to track and dismantle these illicit operations on May 15.
The suspects, aged between 42 and 62, reportedly teamed up with truck drivers and assistants to hijack shipments and sell them to illegal buyers. To avoid detection, the groups frequently abandoned empty vehicles in various locations.
One operation involved two 45,000-litre tankers carrying molasses destined for Benin, valued at N11 million each. While one truck was stopped at Itokin, Lagos, during the offloading process, the second was found at a trailer park in Ogere, Ogun State.
Additionally, police uncovered a second group responsible for hijacking a shipment of dairy products worth N28 million. The goods were originally heading from Sagamu to Jos but were rerouted to Ijebu Ode for black-market sale. Detectives successfully intervened before the products could be completely offloaded.
AIG Jimoh has ordered continued investigations to capture remaining suspects, reaffirming the command’s commitment to protecting regional commerce from sabotage. The detained suspects will face formal charges once the investigation wraps up.
