Wyndham Clark overcomes hostile crowds to secure US Open victory

Wyndham Clark held off a late charge from Sam Burns and navigated hostile crowd reactions to win the US Open, becoming the tournament’s first wire-to-wire winner in over a decade.

Wyndham Clark secured his second US Open title despite a turbulent final round at Shinnecock Hills. Entering Sunday with a six-stroke lead, the American saw his advantage dwindle to a single shot against challenger Sam Burns by the seventh hole. Despite the mounting pressure and a lack of support from the gallery, Clark managed to maintain his composure.

A critical 25-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole helped stabilize his lead, marking him as the first wire-to-wire winner since Martin Kaymer in 2014. Although a bogey on the 17th created late tension, he successfully parred the final hole to clinch the trophy. Throughout the round, Clark dealt with vocal hostility from spectators who favored his playing partner, world number one Scottie Scheffler. Reports indicated that several fans were ejected for their aggressive behavior toward Clark. This victory serves as a significant milestone for the 2023 champion, arriving a year after his well-documented locker room outburst at Oakmont led to disciplinary action.
