WTA Finals to Relocate to Indian Wells Following Early Conclusion of Saudi Partnership

The WTA Finals will relocate to Indian Wells for the 2025 season after mutually agreeing to end their hosting contract with Saudi Arabia one year early due to geopolitical challenges.

The Women’s Tennis Association has announced that its season-ending championship will shift to Indian Wells, California, after reaching an agreement to conclude its partnership with Saudi Arabia one year ahead of schedule. The tournament, which previously spent two years in Riyadh under a three-year contract signed in early 2024, will now be held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden from November 8 to 15.

Reports indicate that geopolitical friction between the United States and Iran influenced the decision to cut the agreement short by mutual consent. WTA chair Valerie Camillo expressed enthusiasm for the new venue, noting that the Indian Wells facility is well-equipped to host a championship of this caliber and will help grow the profile of women’s tennis.

The initial move to Saudi Arabia in 2024 had drawn sharp criticism from observers who accused the nation of using high-profile sports to improve its international image while facing ongoing scrutiny over human rights and gender-related restrictions. At the time, WTA CEO Steve Simon defended the choice, arguing that the organization could serve as a catalyst for positive development and inspire girls in the region to pursue the sport.
