Wike cautions AMAC Chairman over unauthorized street naming in Abuja

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has directed the Abuja Municipal Area Council Chairman to stop naming FCT-constructed streets without official approval.

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, issued a strong warning to Christopher Maikalangu, the Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council. He specifically prohibited the practice of naming streets after individuals without obtaining official authorization from the FCT Administration.

The Minister addressed this issue while inaugurating new road projects in the Gaduwa District, which coincided with the third anniversary of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Wike emphasized that the council should restrict naming rights to roads financed directly by its own budget. He cautioned against exploiting FCT-funded infrastructure as a means to generate revenue through naming schemes.

While acknowledging the historical perspective that local councils typically manage street naming, Wike clarified that projects executed by state or federal authorities require formal permission before names are assigned. He insisted that the FCT Administration must approve any designations on roads it constructs to prevent confusion and maintain oversight.
