WhatsApp to Introduce Usernames for Improved Privacy

Meta is introducing unique usernames to WhatsApp, allowing users to communicate without sharing their phone numbers for better privacy protection.

Meta has announced a significant update for WhatsApp that will allow users to connect without revealing their phone numbers. The company stated on Monday that individuals will soon be able to select unique usernames, a feature aimed at enhancing personal privacy.

By utilizing these handles, users can avoid sharing their primary contact numbers when joining large group chats or initiating conversations with businesses and individuals for the first time. Meta emphasized that there will be no public directory or search suggestions, meaning others must possess the exact username to initiate contact.

Given the platform’s massive user base of over three billion people, securing a preferred handle may be challenging for some. The global rollout is expected to occur gradually over the next few months, with users receiving notifications once the feature becomes available in their specific regions. Additionally, creators, organizations, and small businesses will have the option to claim usernames already associated with their accounts on Facebook or Instagram.
