Google Trends data indicates that citizens used the platform to track developments that directly impacted their lives or captured the national imagination.
The FIFA World Cup stood out as the most significant search topic, overshadowing all other events. Interest remained high throughout the tournament, covering everything from the opening ceremony to the final match. Similarly, the Africa Cup of Nations, specifically Nigeria’s semi-final loss to Morocco, dominated search queries during January.
Geopolitics also became a local concern, as tensions involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz led many to search for updates on global oil markets and fuel costs. Domestic dramas, such as the conflict between cryptocurrency entrepreneur Blord and activist VeryDarkMan, alongside the perplexing Gen Z “67” meme, further fueled search traffic.
Public interest also focused on high-profile figures. Searches tracked the deaths of musician Destiny Boy, actor Alexx Ekubo, and American actor Eric Dane. Additionally, accountability-related topics, including the legal issues of former Minister of Power Saleh Mamman and the release of documents concerning Jeffrey Epstein, remained consistent areas of inquiry.
Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager for West Africa, noted that search patterns serve as a raw, honest reflection of what truly matters to the population. He emphasized that Nigerians frequently use the search engine to investigate and understand complex stories long before they appear in traditional headlines.
