The United States has launched a specialized inter-agency task force aimed at curbing birth tourism, a practice where foreign citizens travel to the country specifically to secure American citizenship for their newborns. Established under the directive of President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the Birth Tourism Prevention Task Force has already cancelled more than 600 visas globally.
This initiative follows two executive orders signed by President Trump, which empower federal agencies to deny visas, pull travel authorizations, and deport foreign nationals entering the US for childbirth. The Department of State emphasized that these actions are necessary to protect the integrity of US citizenship and ensure visa programs are not exploited.
The task force is tasked with reviewing applicant visa histories, identifying birth tourism activities, and dismantling organized networks that profit from these services. Facilitators of this industry often market packages that include visa coaching, housing, and medical arrangements. In some instances, these operators reportedly coach clients to provide false information to immigration officials or forge medical records.
Consular officers worldwide, including those in Nigeria, have been instructed to rigorously screen applicants for signs of intent to give birth in the US. The Department of State maintains that misrepresenting travel intentions can lead to permanent ineligibility for future entry. By coordinating with the Department of Homeland Security, the task force aims to eliminate the misuse of the American immigration system and hold accountable those who participate in these deceptive practices.
