The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has rejected the Presidency’s excitement over a letter purportedly sent by U.S. President Donald Trump to President Bola Tinubu. Through National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, the opposition party argued that standard diplomatic correspondence is being wrongly framed as a validation of the administration’s performance.
The ADC stated that the Tinubu administration is prioritizing foreign approval while local citizens grapple with severe economic strain and persistent insecurity. The party emphasized that letters from world leaders are routine diplomatic gestures that do not mitigate the actual crises facing the country, such as kidnappings in Borno and Kwara states or the ongoing violence in Benue.
Furthermore, the ADC pointed to a contradiction between the government’s rhetoric and U.S. policy. While the Presidency touts this communication as a sign of international confidence, the U.S. Department of State still enforces high-level travel warnings for Nigeria, citing risks of terrorism and violent crime. The party concluded that a friendly note from a foreign leader cannot excuse the government from its constitutional duties to protect citizens and improve living standards.
