A sense of alarm spread through the Mushin, Yaba, and Fadeyi regions of Lagos on Tuesday after word surfaced regarding sporadic gunfire and the purported death of Toba Ijaiya, a high-ranking official within the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). Social media posts claimed that Ijaiya passed away at an unnamed medical facility after sustaining gunshot wounds from unknown assailants two days prior.
These reports sparked concerns about potential retaliation from the union leader’s associates. As a precaution, many locals reached out to family and friends, advising them to head home early and avoid these specific areas. Viral messages warned of a potential collapse of public order, urging citizens to prioritize their safety.
Despite the widespread panic, Lagos State Police spokesperson SP Abmbola Adebisi stated that the command had received no reports of shooting incidents in the area. Other police sources noted that security protocols are active to ensure peace, though officials have not yet officially verified the death or the shooting. Local residents continue to urge law enforcement to maintain a strong presence to prevent potential violence.
