Unfounded ISWAP Warning Leads to Shooting by Yobe Forest Guards

Forest guards in Yobe State opened fire after a false alarm regarding ISWAP fighters, leading to military intervention with no reported casualties.

In the Katarko area of Gujba, Yobe State, local forest guards discharged their weapons repeatedly following a mistaken report regarding potential ISWAP insurgents. The event unfolded on the evening of June 23 at roughly 6:55 pm, as guards misidentified incoming riders as hostile militants.

Reports from security officials indicate that members of the 198 Special Forces Battalion arrived shortly after the incident began. They confirmed that the entire episode stemmed from a false report concerning suspected terrorists riding motorcycles toward the village. To restore order and halt the uncontrolled gunfire, the military disarmed several of the distressed guards.

Official tallies show that 191 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition were expended throughout the commotion. Fortunately, no injuries or property destruction occurred, and the community has returned to a state of calm.
