Three individuals lost their lives due to suffocation amid the massive crowds that gathered in Mexico City to celebrate the national team’s World Cup triumph over Ecuador. The victims included a 19-year-old woman, a 48-year-old woman, and a 44-year-old man, according to local health authorities.
The city government reported that over one million residents congregated near the Angel of Independence monument to commemorate Mexico’s first appearance in the knockout stages of the tournament since 1986. Emergency responders attempted CPR on the victims at different sites along the Paseo de la Reforma before moving them to hospitals, where they were unfortunately declared dead.
Mayor Clara Brugada offered condolences to the grieving families and called on citizens to prioritize safety and empathy during future public gatherings. Despite the festive atmosphere and widespread fireworks, medical personnel were forced to deal with several injuries throughout the city center. Officials had previously warned spectators to avoid the most congested areas due to the density of the crowds in the metropolitan region.
