Flooding in Accra Claims Three Lives Following Heavy Rains

At least three people died after record-breaking rainfall caused severe flooding across Accra, prompting warnings from government officials regarding climate change and urban development.

Severe rainfall triggered widespread flooding throughout Accra on Monday, resulting in at least three fatalities. President John Mahama identified climate change and rapid, poorly planned urban growth as the primary drivers of this disaster.

With roughly 140 millimetres of rain descending in 24 hours, the capital experienced its heaviest precipitation in years. While the president cited global climate shifts, he also criticized the common practice of constructing buildings over natural drainage paths, noting that efforts to clear these blockages often face public backlash.

Emergency crews worked extensively in the Tse Addo district, utilizing boats to evacuate 15 children and an infant. Meanwhile, in the Alajo area, authorities recovered the body of an elderly man, and two additional residents reportedly died after their home’s electrical wiring encountered floodwater. In response, the Ministry of the Interior has advised citizens to limit movement while police and military units continue rescue efforts.

The greater Accra region, housing over five million people, remains highly susceptible to flood-related damage. Many residents, such as retiree Philip Mensah and teacher Patience Naa Adjeley Adjei, reported significant property damage. The Ghana Meteorological Agency expects the inclement weather to continue, keeping the city at risk for further inundation.
