England manager Thomas Tuchel has defended his strategic decisions following a painful 2-1 loss to Argentina on Wednesday, which ended the Three Lions’ World Cup campaign. Despite Anthony Gordon putting England ahead in the second half, the team failed to hold their lead, allowing goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez to seal the victory for the reigning champions.
Tuchel admitted that his team became overly passive after breaking the deadlock at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. He noted that the squad struggled to regain possession, leading to a barrage of chances for Argentina. The coach faced criticism regarding his decision to replace goalscorer Gordon with defender Ezri Konsa in the 72nd minute, shifting the team to a back-five formation. However, Tuchel insisted that the tactical adjustment was an attempt to close gaps that were already causing problems.
Reflecting on the loss, the former Chelsea manager stated that criticism is simply part of the game and emphasized that he takes full responsibility for his choices. Despite the defeat, Tuchel indicated he intends to remain in his position, honoring his contract that runs until the 2028 European Championships, which will be hosted by England.
