Thomas Tuchel Says England and France Squads Oppose World Cup Third-Place Playoff

Thomas Tuchel confirms that players from both England and France are reluctant to participate in the World Cup third-place playoff, preferring to be in the final.

England head coach Thomas Tuchel revealed that neither his squad nor the French national team has any desire to participate in the 2026 World Cup third-place fixture. Both sides would far prefer to be contesting Sunday’s final in New Jersey rather than the consolation match set for Saturday in Miami.

England narrowly missed reaching their second World Cup final after Anthony Gordon put them ahead in the 55th minute. Victory slipped away late when Enzo Fernandez leveled the score in the 85th minute, followed by a stoppage-time goal from substitute Lautaro Martinez that secured the win for Argentina.

Meanwhile, France suffered a 2-0 defeat against the current European champions, with goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro ending manager Didier Deschamps’ hopes of securing a second trophy. Speaking to The Touchline regarding the upcoming matchup against France, Tuchel noted that while no players want to be in this position, they will handle the game professionally despite having one less day of rest than their opponents.
