Herbie Williams, a Swansea City legend and former Wales international, has passed away at the age of 85. The Swansea native dedicated his career to his hometown team, joining the organization as a teenager in 1955 and competing for the senior squad from 1958 through 1975.
With 513 league appearances, Williams holds the third-highest total in the history of the club. Across all competitions, he featured 608 times for the side and netted 129 goals. The Championship club expressed their deep sorrow, describing him as a notably loyal figure who was both gracious and humble in his commitment to the team and the city.
An inside forward, Williams played a key role during the 1963-64 season as Swansea reached the FA Cup semi-finals, a run highlighted by a victory over Liverpool at Anfield before their defeat by Preston North End. Additionally, he was instrumental in the club’s promotion from the fourth tier in 1969-70 and earned three international caps for Wales throughout his tenure. After a brief period in Australia following his retirement, he eventually returned to Swansea.
