Steve Tandy is preparing for his third term leading the Welsh national men’s rugby team, having secured two victories in his previous nine international matches. Despite the conclusion of the domestic rugby season in May, the squad faces a grueling summer schedule consisting of four consecutive weekend fixtures.
The campaign begins on June 27 with a match against the Barbarians at the Allianz Stadium. This will be followed by three Nations Championship fixtures in July against Fiji, Argentina, and South Africa. Following a difficult Six Nations where the team finished at the bottom, Tandy aims to recalibrate during this upcoming stretch.
Logistical hurdles are significant, with the team expected to travel over 12,000 miles in just two weeks. After the opener, Wales will journey to San Juan for a clash against Argentina, before heading to Durban to face the reigning world champions, South Africa, on July 18. Tandy has emphasized that there will be no excuses, encouraging his players to focus on the competitive demands.
The initial 48-man training squad has seen adjustments due to injuries, with players like Louie Hennessey and Keiron Assiratti ruled out. While 13 players from French and English clubs are unavailable for the Barbarians encounter due to scheduling conflicts, other key figures such as Jac Morgan and Dewi Lake remain available to provide experience to the side.
