Senate Leader Akpabio Rejects Claims of Executive Subservience

Senate President Godswill Akpabio maintains that collaborating with the executive branch is a strategic choice for national development rather than an act of constitutional surrender.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has clarified that the National Assembly’s ongoing cooperation with President Bola Tinubu does not signify a loss of legislative independence. During the opening of the 2026 National Assembly Open Week in Abuja, Akpabio asserted that the parliament has no duty to create needless friction with the executive branch.

Akpabio emphasized that the legislature serves the Nigerian public and must remain transparent and accessible. He described the legislative chambers as belonging to the citizens, noting that democracy is bolstered when the public engages in governance rather than merely observing from the sidelines.

Reflecting on the 10th National Assembly’s performance, the Senate President highlighted the passage of over 100 bills during the first three years of the term. These legislative achievements include reforms to tax laws, updates to the national minimum wage, and initiatives designed to enhance national security and education.

The Senate leader argued that true independence is not defined by constant opposition. Instead, he maintained that the assembly’s constitutional role is to scrutinize, support, and correct government policies in the national interest. He further praised the harmonious working relationship between the Senate and the House of Representatives as a key factor in the institution’s recent productivity.
