Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has requested that President Bola Tinubu offer a two-year amnesty period to former leaders suspected of embezzling public funds. Kalu, representing Abia North, suggested that these individuals be allowed to return the money voluntarily without the threat of legal action.
During an appearance on News Central TV’s 60 Minutes With Mr Kay, the former governor of Abia State explained that large sums of capital are currently being stored in private residences throughout Abuja. He argued that this money remains outside of the formal banking system and therefore fails to support national economic development.
Kalu proposed that the government establish a window for amnesty for anyone who has held public funds since 1960. By encouraging these individuals to repatriate the hidden cash into the banking sector, the senator believes the Nigerian economy would receive a significant boost.
