Irish authorities have launched an extensive security operation to facilitate the extradition of suspected gang leader Daniel Kinahan. Following his arrest in the United Arab Emirates in April, a government aircraft departed for Dubai on Saturday to retrieve the 49-year-old. Upon his return to Dublin this Sunday, he will be presented to the Special Criminal Court to face charges related to his role in managing an organized crime syndicate.
To bolster security, the Irish Prison Service has acquired a specialized armored vehicle for high-risk prisoner transport. Kinahan, who was previously sanctioned by the US Treasury in 2022, is widely regarded as a key figure in a cartel linked to numerous global criminal activities, including the importation of illegal drugs and firearms. His organization is alleged to have generated over €1 billion globally and is connected to multiple homicides, including a violent feud in Ireland that resulted in 18 deaths.
Although Kinahan fought the extradition process for several months, his appeals were unsuccessful. Once back in Ireland, he is expected to be remanded at the maximum-security Portlaoise Prison, where facilities have been upgraded to house him. While Kinahan’s legal representatives have consistently denied any involvement in criminal activity, Irish law enforcement, supported by the Irish Defence Forces and armed gardaí, remain focused on bringing him to trial.
