Sanwo-Olu Praises Senate Over Milestone State Police Legislation

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has lauded the Senate for passing a constitutional amendment bill to establish state police, calling it a major reform for national security and federalism.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has commended President Bola Tinubu after the Senate passed a constitutional amendment bill to create state police. In a statement issued Thursday, the governor labeled the approval of the bill’s 26 clauses a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s security framework and democratic growth.

Sanwo-Olu emphasized that this reform is expected to enhance local law enforcement and elevate public safety nationwide. He characterized the parliamentary decision as a significant victory for federalism, noting that President Tinubu has advocated for this change since his tenure as Lagos State Governor from 1999 to 2007. Despite historical opposition, the governor highlighted the president’s persistence in pushing for this structural shift.

The governor noted that local police units would provide a vital tool against kidnapping, banditry, and terrorism. He praised the Senate for its decisive action and called upon state houses of assembly to prioritize the bill’s passage to ensure the constitutional amendment is finalized.
