Bashir Ahmad, a former presidential assistant, has commented on the reported political arrangement between Rabiu Kwankwaso and Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). In a recent post on his verified X profile, Ahmad suggested that Kwankwaso recognizes that the 2027 election cycle is unlikely to yield success for their camp.
This follows statements from Kwankwaso, who mentioned an existing written pact with Obi regarding a single four-year term should they secure victory in the 2027 polls. According to Ahmad, the agreement mandates that Obi appear on the ballot in 2027, with a pledge to forgo a 2031 bid in favor of backing Kwankwaso’s own presidential aspirations, regardless of the initial election result.
Ahmad remarked that Kwankwaso is approaching this alliance with a defined long-term strategy, acknowledging the difficulties associated with the upcoming 2027 contest. Currently, Kwankwaso serves as Obi’s running mate for the upcoming general elections. Both politicians moved to the NDC this past May, leaving the African Democratic Congress due to ongoing legal disputes and internal friction.
