Rubio labels Folarin Balogun’s World Cup red card an injustice

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has criticized the red card issued to Folarin Balogun, calling for an appeal despite FIFA rules prohibiting one.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticized the recent decision to send off striker Folarin Balogun during the USA’s World Cup victory over Bosnia, claiming the team was treated unfairly. Despite the 2-0 win, the red card means Balogun will be unable to participate in the upcoming last-16 match against Belgium.

Speaking at the White House, Rubio suggested that an appeal should be launched, though he acknowledged that such a move might be ineffective. FIFA regulations currently mandate an automatic suspension for red card offenses, which cannot be contested.

The expulsion occurred in the 64th minute following a VAR review that deemed Balogun had stamped on defender Tarik Muharemovic. US head coach Mauricio Pochettino defended his player, arguing that the red card was unwarranted and that the situation demands a fair appeal process.

The loss of Balogun, who has already netted three goals in the tournament, presents a significant challenge for the American squad as they advance in the competition. While commenting on the matter, Rubio declined to discuss other geopolitical topics, focusing his remarks solely on the sporting controversy.
