Olympic champion Rhys McClenaghan is gearing up for a busy summer featuring the Commonwealth Games and European Championships. The gymnast spent much of 2025 recovering from shoulder surgery, making his return to fitness a welcome change of pace. He is now introducing a refined routine, dubbed ‘Rhys 2.0,’ which he aims to perfect ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
McClenaghan noted that while the Commonwealth Games serve as a platform to showcase his ongoing progress, his ultimate goal is to present a polished, world-class product by the next Olympic cycle. His new routine is a response to recent regulation changes, pushing him to evolve his style to remain at the top of the sport. He believes that achieving consistent success across multiple Olympic periods is what defines a truly great athlete.
Reflecting on his past, McClenaghan recalls his breakout gold medal win in 2018 as the foundational moment of his career. Having secured a silver medal in Birmingham four years ago, he is eager to return to the top of the podium in Glasgow. He also expressed optimism about the broader Team NI squad, noting a shift toward greater confidence and ambition among the younger athletes representing Northern Ireland.
Despite his status as the first gymnast to complete a career Grand Slam of Olympic, World, and European titles, McClenaghan remains driven. He used his time away from the sport during injury rehabilitation to process his recent successes and renew his appreciation for gymnastics. Committed to his craft, he is determined to continue competing while he is healthy and capable of maintaining his position as a world leader in the sport.
