Retired Admiral Ola Sa’ad Ibrahim, the former Chief of Defence Staff, has encouraged former military personnel to maintain their involvement in national progress. Speaking at the 41st anniversary dinner for the 6th Regular Course of the Naval War College in Abuja, Ibrahim emphasized that leaving active duty should not signal an end to serving the country. He argued that the leadership skills and expertise gained during a military career are vital for mentoring youth and bolstering national institutions.
Addressing the shifting global security landscape, Ibrahim noted that Nigeria must prioritize developing internal capabilities and strengthening its human resources to protect its sovereignty. He highlighted that true security relies on professional character and mutual trust rather than just hardware. He reminded attendees that while military rank commands obedience, personal character ensures lasting respect and a meaningful legacy.
During the event, Commodore Alex Nimyel, the alumni association president, reflected on the group’s journey since 1985. He underscored the importance of the brotherhood formed through shared service. Similarly, Rear Admiral Elkana Jaiyeola urged veterans to value their personal relationships above social status, encouraging members to provide emotional and practical support to one another and to the families of deceased colleagues. As part of their anniversary activities, the alumni association also conducted a charitable visit to the Abuja Children’s Home in Karu.
