R&B musician R. Kelly has submitted a formal petition to President Donald Trump, requesting a reduction of his 31-year federal prison term. Legal documentation obtained from the Office of the Pardon Attorney confirms that the application for executive clemency is currently under consideration.
Known legally as Robert Sylvester Kelly, the 59-year-old was initially convicted in 2021 on racketeering charges related to the exploitation of women and minors. He received a 30-year sentence for those crimes. Subsequent convictions in 2022 regarding child sexual abuse material added further time, resulting in a total sentence of 31 years, with his projected release set for 2046.
The performer is presently incarcerated at a facility in North Carolina. His attorney, Beau Brindley, has spent over a year advocating for executive relief. In 2025, Brindley unsuccessfully requested a transfer to home confinement, citing concerns over alleged threats to the singer’s safety within the prison system. Despite these ongoing efforts and the denial of previous court motions, Kelly maintains his innocence as the commutation request remains pending.
