President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, officially opened the first phase of the Kuje-Gwagwalada dual carriageway on Wednesday. This new 7-kilometre route effectively resolves longstanding issues of poor security, economic stagnation, and travel hazards that plagued local residents and commuters for years.
During the event, the President emphasized that the road is a vital piece of infrastructure for the Kuje, Gwagwalada, and Kwali councils. He noted that the area previously suffered from high crime rates, lost agricultural revenue, and significant traffic delays. The new project, which includes modern drainage, pedestrian paths, and solar lighting, is designed to serve as a secure economic artery connecting Abuja to Southern Nigeria.
The administration presented the project as a key component of its Renewed Hope Agenda, promising to expand development beyond the central districts of Abuja. President Tinubu encouraged the public to take ownership of the infrastructure by protecting it from vandalism and adhering to civil regulations. He specifically praised FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for his commitment to delivering development to underserved satellite communities rather than focusing exclusively on affluent districts like Maitama and Asokoro.
Minister Wike explained that the project originated from direct feedback gathered during community consultations in 2023. After personally witnessing the severe state of the road, he pushed for its approval, which was granted by the Federal Executive Council in early 2025. The contract was awarded to Gilmor Engineering Nigeria Limited. Officials confirmed that while the first phase is now complete, the second phase, covering an additional six kilometres, is slated for completion by December 2026.
