Chaos erupted inside the Abuja Federal High Court on Monday as armed Department of State Services (DSS) agents moved to take African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore into custody. This action followed a directive from Justice Mohammed Umar, who ordered that Sowore be held at the Kuje Correctional Centre until Wednesday.
Video recordings from the scene show the activist being escorted by DSS personnel immediately after the bail revocation. The judge’s decision to revoke bail stemmed from DSS complaints concerning public remarks made by Sowore, in which he allegedly labeled President Bola Tinubu a criminal.
Earlier that day, Justice Umar denied a request from Sowore’s legal team for him to recuse himself from the case. The defense had contended that a prior court absence—cited as the justification for revoking bail—was caused by Sowore meeting with his new lead attorney, Olumide-Fusika, SAN, who had previously notified the court of this engagement.
