Popular cocktail brand faces criticism over claims of recyclable packaging

A viral cocktail brand is under fire after experts confirmed its packaging is impossible to recycle in the UK, contradicting the company’s own marketing claims.

BuzzBallz, the pre-mixed cocktails surging in popularity among younger consumers, are facing scrutiny after experts debunked the company’s claims regarding the recyclability of its containers. While the brand previously suggested its packaging could be recycled, environmental groups argue that the design, which fuses a PET plastic shell with an aluminium lid, makes it impossible to process in the UK.

Adam Herriott of WRAP, a global environmental action organization, explained that the hybrid nature of the packaging renders it unrecyclable. Because local authorities lack the technology to separate the two materials, these containers often contaminate recycling streams or end up in general waste. The spherical shape further complicates matters by rolling off conveyor belts in sorting facilities, causing potential operational hazards.

Waste analytics firm Greyparrot found that in a sample facility, BuzzBallz packaging contaminated recycled plastic batches 66% of the time. Experts have labeled the company’s previous marketing as greenwashing, noting that the brand’s website once referenced a TerraCycle program that is exclusive to the United States and unavailable to British customers.

Following inquiries about these discrepancies, the company removed the misleading information from its website and FAQs. A spokesperson attributed the statements to a website update error, apologizing for the inaccuracy while declining to comment on the specific claims that had previously stated the packaging was widely accepted by local councils.
