The Kaduna State Police Command has uncovered unexploded military-grade bombs and a cache of weapons concealed within a waste consignment transported from Borno State to Kaduna. This discovery follows growing concerns over the unchecked movement of materials from conflict-affected regions.
According to a statement by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, the explosives were found on August 2, 2025, after the police received credible intelligence. The dangerous materials were discovered at a scavenger facility in the Kudandan Industrial Area, located in Kaduna South Local Government Area.
A specialized team from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, led by its commander, swiftly responded and confirmed that the items were unexploded ordnance (UXOs). The explosives were safely moved to a secure location for controlled detonation in accordance with standard safety procedures.
In addition to the UXOs, police also recovered a locally made revolver loaded with six rounds, 15 rounds of 7.2mm live ammunition, three live cartridges, and various other ammunition types during the operation.
Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, immediately ordered the sealing of the facility to enable a full sweep by EOD personnel, ensuring no additional explosives remained. He issued a stern warning to scavenger businesses to cease operations involving scrap materials from insurgency-affected areas, condemning the transport of such high-risk waste into Kaduna.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the source and purpose of the transported explosives.
